any seattle area manboobzers?

Post by briget on Fri Nov 11, 2011 8:07 pm

I'm going to be moving to the seattle area come the first of the year. Are there any other readers who live around that area?

Ah, you're up north-ways. Nothing to do there.

Seattle's (and Bellevue since you're close to that side of the lake) have pretty active social scenes. It's more of what're you in to?
Can I assume that since you're new and locating to the east side you're techies?
MS, Google and Expedia are filled with geeks who get together after work for stuff. Let me know what sorts of stuff the two of you are into and I might be able to point you in the right direction.

I'm a bio major and my bf is a recent mechanical engineering grad. He works for a company that makes the machines that manufacture air plane composite pieces. My bf and I are really into swing dancing so if you know of any place that does swing dance, that would be awesome. Other than that we're pretty much your typical nerds, so where the nerds go to have fun would be really helpful. He's pretty socially awkward so making friends on his own isn't nearly as easy for him as it is for me. We want stuff that we can go do as a couple where it's not going to be weird that we are 20 somethings and nerdy.

Century Ballroom is the top place to go for dance.
http://www.centuryballroom.com/
They do lessons typically followed by an open dance. So if you already know how it should be easy enough to show up just for the dance.

The Dreaming is for all your comic and game needs.
http://www.thedreamingcomicsandgames.com/
Erin has an open table most the time for drop in games or just to hang out and chat.
Seattle is super nerd friendly.
Grims is a sort of steampunk bar.
http://www.grimseattle.com/
And Wayward coffeehouse is where the brown coats hang out if you're a Firefly fan. It also is where a lot of gamers go.
http://www.waywardcoffee.com/
And of course PAX and NorwesCon for your large gatherings.

You can until 9pm. Then it's 21 and over.

If you head up to Everett, there's AFK Tavern.
http://www.afktavern.com/

There's also Gameworks in Downtown for your video game needs.
http://www.gameworks.com/
And Gary's Games also has a table to find people to talk to.
http://pugetbridgesupply.com/ (The URL is weird, but it's the right one...)

I will be moving back down to the Bay Area in California in December, so I won't be in the area (I was south of Seattle in Tacoma). Though, of note, many of my friends were blues dancers (not quite swing, I know).

http://seattlebluesdance.com/default.aspx

Cynickal has suggested many of the other interesting things that nerd folk such as myself find interesting in the area.

If you happen to be in Tacoma, there is Dorky's arcade, which is a retro arcade place. It is a pretty fun place to be. http://www.weeklyvolcano.com/bars-clubs/scene-it/2011/11/dorkys-arcade-games-beer-and-live-rock-music-in-downtown-tacoma/print/

Sadly they don't seem to have a website.

@flib, we're not into blues but thanks though. It's too slow for our personal tastes. We'll definitely be checking out the arcade if we make it down that way though. Thanks you guys. I was wondering, what about food? I'm a bit of a foodie and I'd like to have a decent set of restaurants to go to when I'm looking to go out to eat.

My ex and I used eat out (and still do every so often) near Ballard a fair amount. I'll list a few of our favorite places.

A really nice Neapolitan pizza place.

this restaurant is pretty solid, and focuses on vegetarian cuisine
http://www.sutraseattle.com/menu/

Satay Seattle is also quite awesome. It was a recent restaurant and the owners are super nice

Finally, there is a really nice gelato place called the fainting goat that is absolutely delicious.

I can think of several places in Tacoma, though that is much further away, but Ballard is the area I've explored more in Seattle. There is tons more I am sure others can suggest.

thanks flib. Does the gelato place serve goats milk gelato? I have to minimize the amount of cows milk I eat so finding a place that actually makes decent frozen dessert isn't easy, especially when I've been living in the middle of the bible belt (seriously if you try and feed these people food that isn't fried they have a conniption)

I think they do most of it from cows milk from here: http://www.freshbreezeorganic.com/

But if I recall they do have some alternatives there as well. Several of their flavors are goats milk, and they have sorbets as well.

I don't live in Seattle, but I'm there regularly enough, and I have to say that (in my experience) if there are two things Seattle has in abundance, it is 20-something nerds and great food. I think you'll be happy on both counts.

You've probably checked out the Stranger, but they've got listings of food/things to do.

Re. Seattle-livin', though, if this is your first time living in the Pacific Northwest, I'd recommend lots of St. Johns Wort and/or one of those sunlight lamps. The winters are grey and damp, and it can kinda do a number on you, especially if you're used to living someplace that gets a lot more sunlight. You also might find that you get a permanent chest cold sometime in your first year. I don't have any tips to get around it; just know you're not alone when it happens. Takes a while to get the right kind of mold in your lungs.

@ bee, that sounds just wonderful. I grew up in NM and was subjected to a constant mold infection from the dirt that inevitably ended up in every orifice of your body no matter what you did. I just started to get better living where I am now. I don't go out into the sun too often to begin with, but I already started a vitamin d supplement. I might add the st. john's wort in there if I notice a difference once I get up there though.

"especially if you're used to living someplace that gets a lot more sunlight."

What's that?

Goat's milk dessert... Hmmm.
Not to sure if Molly Moo's might have something. They've been spreading like wildfire.
There are lots of food places. The Thai craze is dying down a bit with the rise of taco trucks. If you're unsure try the Bite of Seattle to find something you like.

I'll be moving to Seattle in the fall. I don't know what part of town yet; whatever I can get that's most convenient to the University.
